Mediterranean Small Islands Program in Marseille

In close partnership with IMPAC3, Marseille hosts in September and October 2013 exhibitions and seminars on the conservation of small islands in the Mediterranean and all around the globe.

While essential to maintaining biodiversity, small islands stand under increasing pressure from human activities: pollution, urbanization, overusage, invasive alien species.

The project, entitled “Frioul nombr’îles du monde », is named after the Frioul islands, a small archipelago located a stone’s throw from Marseille. It aims to show how fragile the balance of such islands can be, and highlights measures needed to ensure their conservation.

The project will allow organizations involved in small-island conservation to take center stage in various venues in Marseille, including the historic Alcazar Library, the LAME Photo Gallery and the Frioul islands themselves.

The Conservatoire du littoral (French institution in charge of protecting the French coastline) is coordinating the event within the framework of the Mediterranean Small Islands Inititiative (PIM).
