Morocco Tunes in to Marine Protected Areas

Morocco is about to create three test MPAs in an effort to contribute to the sustainability of small-scale fisheries.

Under the leadership of the Agence du partenariat pour le progress (APP), a Moroccan public agency created in 2008, three test sites were selected, based on an review by the National institute of Fisheries Research (INHR).

Protective artificial reefs are already under construction on two of the three sites, and more than 1500 fishermen have been briefed on the MPA concept. The creation decree is due shortly. The project is estimated at around USD 2.5 million. It is financed by the United States, via the Millenium Challenge Corporation.
