International Union for Conservation of Nature

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organization.

IUCN’s vision is one of a balanced world that values and conserves nature. Its mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies around the globe to protect the integrity and diversity of nature, and to ensure that any use of natural resources is both equitable and ecologically sustainable.

IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) is the premier network of protected area expertise, worldwide. With over 1,700 members, spanning 140 countries, it promotes the establishment and effective management of a world-wide representative network of terrestrial and marine protected areas by:

  • Helping governments and others plan protected areas and integrate them into all sectors;
  • Providing strategic advice to policy makers;
  • Strengthening capacity and investment in protected areas;
  • Convening the diverse constituency of protected area stakeholders to address challenging issues.

IUCN-WCPA is organizing the World Parks Congress in Sydney, Australia, in November 2014.IUCN WCPA en
